ARTIFACT 8: Student's free choice
Sullivan Ballou’s Letter to Sarah

This letter shows that people living in America has not much education in the 19th century.
It also shows that women in the past have to stay at home and can't work or go to war like the men.

Here are some questions that is regarding this letter. I have answered all the questions with my understanding of this letter.
How did this letter make you feel?
I feel touched and sad after reading the letter. I feel that he needs respect as he died in war and for his country and his family. He is a good role model.

Why do you think Sullivan Ballou wrote this letter?
I think he wrote this letter to let his wife know that he's safe and he will be going to the war. He is telling her not to be sad in the letter.

If you were Sullivan’s wife or children, would you plead with him not to enlist in the Union army? Why or why not?
I would not plead with him not to enlist in the Union army as it is a chance to help the Union army and I will not have any regrets if her go and fight in the war.

In how many ways does Sullivan comfort his wife by what he writes to her?
He told her how much he loved her and they could meet again.

Does he have regrets for himself, or only for his wife and children?
He have regrets for himself.

Sullivan writes that he is "communing with God, my country, and thee." What is his relationship to the claims that each of these make upon his life?
He is commited to God, his country and he loves his family a lot.

Images of "wind" and "breath" appear and reappear in the letter. How are these images related at different times to "God, my country, and thee"?
It shows how close he is to God and how he wanted to stay close to his wife even after he die.
Sullivan says that he is perfectly willing to die to pay the debt owed to those who fell in the American Revolution. What debt, if any, do students feel we owe to those who have fought and died so we could be here today?
